Adorable Rankmaniac Bunny :) |
This is the official blog of the Rankmaniac 2012 competition for the students of Caltech CS144. The goal of this project is to have our page rank as high as possible on a google or bing image search for "rankmaniac 2012". Wish us luck!

Super Bowl Hype Gone.
Squirrels suck
Squirrels
Squirrel, squirrel, on the wall
Who's the cutest one of all?
Though my digits you may bite,
When I try to be polite.
Offer up my hand to shake,
Finger meat, you're quick to take.
Squirrel, you are quick to turn
My bliss into a throbbing burn.
Weathering these stinging pains,
Rabies coursing through my veins,
I look upon this oozing gash,
Thoughts so livid, hateful, rash.
Now I think of turning you
Into tasty squirrel stew.
You see the malice in my eye,
Stay no more - you're sure to die.
Scamper off, you quick take flight
Out of reach and out of sight.
Leave me nurse my bitter scar.
Sinister, you watch afar.
Squirrel, squirrel, on the wall
Who's the cruelest one of all?

Update... for the Sake of an Update
I'm running out of things to put on here for Rankmaniacs to read. So, I will start with the fact that this blog mysteriously disappeared from the first page of Google Image search :(. We're still on the next few pages though. Secondly, it is raining outside and I don't want to go to my morning Algorithm class so I am going to sit here and blog about Rankmaniac 2012 instead. Third, Valentine's Day is tomorrow, So get ready for chocolate.

Search Keywords
So, I was exploring our blog stats and found some funny search keywords that lead to our scam blog... Among them are the expected "rankmaniac 2012", "rankmaniac 2012 butterflies"?, and "rankmaniac 2012 image optimization seo". I was more surprised that we also have a few hits for:
- super valentine hits (2012)
- valentines day
- "scumbag god" reddit february 2012
- fack valentines day
- how to get ranked on bing image search
- pictures of a small super bowl trophy
Also, surprise surprise, our top referrer is facebook... I just said that so I could include a rankmaniac 2012 image.
Has anyone else noticed this recently?
Rankmaniacs would never post pictures of snow.... maybe. Don't blame me if I have. I do miss snow though. There's so much sun at Caltech.

Countdown to Valentine's Day
Only three days left until Valentine's Day! What should I post here to make it related to rankmaniac 2012? Does it matter? Let's just see how this picture does on Google image search for the next few days. It's the top hit for Valentine's heart right now.

Rankmaniac 2012... Another Update?
Whatever we are doing it's working. It's funny that good things happen when rankmaniacs put their brains together and actually think about we should do. Also, our rankmaniac reloaded report was due today which is half the points for this assignment... I guess we are half way done then :D
LOTRankmaniac
Since the funniest image we have on our rankmaniac 2012 blog is LOTR related and Jadot has been obsessing over getting 9 hours of extended LOTR on BlueRay 1080p for the past 2 days I figured ... why not keep up with this theme?
So, I stole this picture I remembered from a few months back from a friend's Facebook (thanks Ben) and am posting on this blog for some laughs (to make fun of Jadot).

Rankmaniac 2012 ... Holy sh!t we are on top
Hey everyone! Do a google image search for "rankmaniac 2012" and see what you get! If we are still winning (we are right now!) then the first image in the page will be a cute teddy bear made out of rice from our other blog. Click on it! Explore our other blog, comment on our stuff, you know what to do. And look for the super bowl picture, it's still up the somewhere too.
See all those red circles??? That's all us :P
Valentine's Day for rankmaniacs
So, the super bowl is long over and probably forgotten by now... What's the next big event our Rankmaniac 2012 blog can ride on? Valentine's Day.
So, check out this cute, adorable, kissed puppy and tell me he's not what Rankmaniacs want for Valentine's.
Maybe in a week this picture will ride to the top of the image search for Rankmaniac 2012.

Taking over Bing
... or at least the lower half of Bing web search.
Yesterday we decided to start a link farm - as in make a bunch of phony Rankmaniac 2012 sites and link them to our two working blogs. So, as you can see above, our legit CS blog is ranked, our scam blog (the one you are reading) is ranked, and my fake blog about swimming and water polo at Caltech is also ranked (and it took less than 12 hours!).
So, if you've gotten this far, see how many of our phony sites you can find, because we won't be linking to them. (Contest maybe? Who can find the most?)

Ahmad Bradshaw
I know it's already been posted, but it bears repeating - best play of the game without a doubt. Ahmad gets an award for most awkward touchdown ever.
Super Bowl Fail to Win
If we could fail this well we would win Rankmaniac 2012. |
On another note, this blog has disappeared from the first couple of pages of Bing web search. Not a huge deal though because no one has gotten on Bing image search at all... and our other blog is doing pretty well on both google image search and Bing web search. So, I guess this is just our back up blog to keep the Super Bowl picture up there for Rankmaniac 2012.
Also, the image came from here.

Beware - there is a fake Super Bowl picture out there.
Hello loyal friends and fans of our strange blog!
I just wanted to let everyone know that another team is trying to sabotage our awesome rankmaniac 2012 super bowl idea by also putting a super bowl picture on their website (and I didn't even have to click on their link to find out :). So, beware! Don't click on the super bowl picture unless it takes you to the website myrankmaniac2012.blogspot.com underneath it :D
Since football season is over now I doubt anybody is going to be looking for super bowl pictures after tomorrow so it may not be a huge deal.
What should our next hit image be? A big heart for Valentine's Day?

SUPER BOWL!!!!
So, I just finished watching the Super Bowl, and trust me when I say I'm not a football fan. However, I am a fan of winning and a fan of money so I was happy to win $25 for guessing the final score of the game would be 23-17 Giants. (I tied with another student and we split the prize :) The score was actually 21-17 Giants (correct me if I'm wrong, I can't remember now).
Anyways, I just wanted to take this opportunity to post another super bowl picture, which is now the only one of ours appearing on Google image search for "rankmaniac 2012" and to brag about winning money on facebook :P

Science is Awesome
Foam Torch Video
This guy covers his hand in foam, torches it, and then eats it.
I only watched the first minute and a half but this looks awesome and scary and gross and perfect for our rankmaniac blog.

The Pitfalls of Writing a Clickbot
One way to up your image's pagerank (and win Rankmaniac 2012) is to get your link clicked on a lot. Therefore, it would make sense to write a clickbot that automatically searches for your link and clicks on it. I had several ideas for writing a click bot.
First, I wanted to write a python script that fetches images.google.com, looks for the input field, performs an image search and then clicks on our image. This is the simplest way to write a click bot and win Rankmaniac 2012. There are some downsides. First, Google randomizes the id, name, etc... of their input field and of their other elements on the image search page. However, I could probably just search the page for the input field with the correct attributes and perform the search with that element. Another downside is that google does a pretty good job about detecting click fraud. Here's a study that Google did about it (http://www.usenix.org/event/hotbots07/tech/full_papers/daswani/daswani.pdf).

My new idea is to use some sort of Custom Search API to write a bunch of search queries in javascript, put the pages on line and run them through proxies to simulate a lot of diverse traffic. However, Google doesn't really have a good search API and this would be difficult. Also, they'd still probably be able to detect the click fraud. My search continues...

How Google Ranks Images
We're a few days into the Rankmaniac 2012 competition now and what we've learned is that we pretty much have no idea what we are doing. We attempted to harness the power of social networks and hilarious memes, but the only images of ours that show up on Google image search are the ones that have been on the web for a while and were popular before we posted them - the Super Bowl image, the Google and Bing logos, and my Google+ profile picture (this one still baffles me).
Why are these images doing better than our own original content? The first is that we linked directly to the url of this image (our blog doesn't host these). Since these images already appear all over the web, Google has deemed them the most important pictures on our blog (again, my profile picture is still an conundrum). So, even though none of these images are the ones we are trying to rank, they do pretty well in the search.
So, to actually learn something about search engine optimization (SEO), we need to figure out how to rank our own images on image search. Bryan and Judy have been posting some pretty adorable and kind of funny images but none of them have made it to the search. By googling "how google ranks images", we learned that there are a few image factors that affect the image search results:

Bryan and Judy have been posting some pretty adorable and kind of funny images but none of them have made it to the search. By googling "how google ranks images", we learned that there are a few image factors that affect the image search results:
- image filename: All of the pictures we have posted (except those we linked to) have in their filenames "rankmaniac2012" or some variation of the query keyword.
- text around the image: Descriptive captions are a plus! We have tried to include the keywords anywhere we can near the images and all over the blog.
- alt and title attributes: The alternative text of the image (the words that show up instead of the picture if it doesn't load) and the title of the image (the words that show up when you scroll over the picture) give Google more information about what the picture is and, when related to the keywords, will give it higher rank for the query "rankmaniac 2012".
- PageRank of the website: This is where we are lacking. We need more websites to link to us!
- Focus of the webpage: Our website is about the rankmaniac 2012 competition, so it needs to look like a legitimate webpage with relevant content.
These are the things that we intend to try for the duration of the contest, but if anyone has other suggestions we would much appreciate it ;).

What noise does a lion make?
We found this lion at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo. It spat at us for a good 30 seconds.
