We've reserved a bunch of other blog names for two reasons:
1) Google seems to like links from blogspot, so it should up the pagerank of our main blog if we link from our "other" blogs.
2) Reserving the URL's early will prevent other groups from getting good URLs, which will of course help us.
I have also added a link to this site from http://www.bryanjadot.com, my website. I will soon add another from http://ugcs.caltech.edu/~bjadot
This is the official blog of the Rankmaniac 2012 competition for the students of Caltech CS144. The goal of this project is to have our page rank as high as possible on a google or bing image search for "rankmaniac 2012". Wish us luck!

Google vs. Bing
VERSUS
After a day with the Super Bowl picture we are already doing pretty well on Google (yaaay! we're the the 4th picture!), but have yet to make an appearance on the image search of Bing. As a matter of fact, the image search for "rankmaniac 2012" on Bing returns only two results - the Carnegie Mellon and Caltech logos. So as I usually do when I don't know something, I googled "how does bing work". While I have yet to dig through all of the results, the top Google hit, a blog about SEOs, explained how to get a higher rank on Bing the best. Apparently, Bing puts more emphasis on the domain age (older = better) and on links from pages with the keyword in the main tag. In other words, it looks like we need to more research on how to get ranked on Bing image search. (Bryan, get on that.)

Rankmaniac 2012 – Reloaded
Have you ever noticed that you don't need to sift through pages and pages of google (or bing) results to find exactly what you were looking for? Ever wonder how google knows exactly what you're looking for? It turns out there's a lot of math and graphs and a special analysis called PageRank (which did not get its name because it ranks pages, but is apparently named after Larry Page).
So, the purpose of this course project is to manipulate our way to the top of this system. The higher we rank on Google and Bing image searches, the better the grade we get. The most obvious way to do this is just have heavy traffic come through this blog! So tell your friends to visit us and click on the Super Bowl picture when you image search "rankmaniac 2012".
